Same charge, different speeds

DC uses an adjustable average power that drops above 80%. Actual speeds vary with the car, temperature and charger.

Your charge, at other rates

The same energy added to your battery, using each charger's losses. Example rates, not live prices.

EV Charging Time Calculator

Charging time depends on energy needed and the power your car can accept. A more powerful charger cannot exceed the vehicle's limit. DC charging slows as the battery fills; the calculator uses staged average power rather than sustained peak power.

Worked example and assumptions

A 60 kWh usable battery charged from 20% to 80% stores 36 kWh. With 10% AC losses, 40 kWh is supplied. At 7.4 kW, this takes about 5 hours 24 minutes.

Calculation method · Charging losses

Make sense of your next charge

Use your car’s usable battery, electricity rate and charging losses to estimate cost, time and range. Prices are examples until you enter your own rate.

How the charging cost is calculated

A 60 kWh usable battery charged from 20% to 80% stores 36 kWh. With 10% losses, 40 kWh is supplied. At an illustrative 30p/kWh, that costs £12 before additional fees. At 4 miles per battery kWh, that is 8.33p per mile.

Supplied energy = stored energy ÷ (1 − loss fraction). Energy cost = supplied energy × price per kWh. Session fees entered separately are added; parking, idle and standing charges are excluded.

Estimated DC average power

Average powers are before losses and capped by the vehicle and charger limits. Automatic estimates use a matching published charging time where available, with approximate averages outside that interval. Otherwise they use 65% / 25% of peak power. Editing an average switches to your own settings.

A useful estimate

EV Calculated estimates costs, energy, time and added range for your EV. Search the catalogue or enter any vehicle manually.

We may not have the exact details for your car. Some versions have different batteries or charging speeds, and our information may be out of date. Check your car’s handbook and update any details that don’t match.

Your charging cost depends on the electricity price you enter and the energy used while charging. Charging can take longer in cold weather or when the battery is nearly full. The driving range you gain depends on your driving, the weather and your battery’s condition.

Range is estimated from your entered efficiency, a published-range estimate, or a general starting value. For a better estimate, enter the miles or kilometres per battery kWh shown by your car, rather than a figure that includes charging losses. Charging times remain approximate, even when based on a published charging interval. The estimate covers electricity only, at the price you enter. It assumes that price applies throughout the charge and excludes electricity consumed after reaching full charge. It does not include parking, connection fees, charges for staying plugged in, or your home electricity standing charge. Check the charger’s prices before you start.

Settings and saved estimates are stored only in this browser. They do not sync between devices. Clearing site data removes them. The app has no analytics or third-party fonts or scripts.
